DOC to DOCX Converter (and DOCX to DOC)

DOC to DOCX converts old Word 97-2003 documents (.doc) into DOCX, the format every version of Word since 2007 uses by default and the one Google Docs and LibreOffice handle best. It also works the other way: upload a .docx and you get a .doc back, for someone who still uses Word 2003 or earlier.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images & PDF — all in one place.

    Good to know

The direction is set by the file you upload: a .doc comes back as a .docx, and a .docx comes back as a .doc. The conversion runs through LibreOffice on our server; text, headings, tables and pictures carry over, but a document with a complex layout can come out slightly differently, so give the result a quick look before you send it. Pictures linked from other websites (rather than stored in the file) are removed from a DOCX before conversion, for security. Password-protected files can't be converted.

    When you'd use this

    • Uploading an old .doc to a form or portal that only accepts .docx.
    • Opening an old Word 97-2003 file in Google Docs or a current program without Compatibility Mode.
    • Sending a document to someone who still uses Word 2003 or earlier (DOCX to DOC).

    Privacy & security

Your file is used only to perform this conversion, in an isolated temporary workspace, and is deleted automatically as soon as the converted file is returned to you (or immediately if the conversion fails). See our Privacy notice for details.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?

DOC is the binary format used by Word 97 to 2003; DOCX is the modern format used since Word 2007, a ZIP archive of XML files. Our DOC vs DOCX guide explains what that changes for you.

Can I convert DOCX to DOC as well?

Yes -- upload a .docx file and you get a .doc back. You only need this if the person you are sending it to uses Word 2003 or earlier; every newer version of Word opens DOCX.

Will my document look the same?

Text, headings, tables and pictures carry over. Complex layouts can shift slightly, and fonts we don't have installed are replaced, so check the converted file before you send it.

Can I convert DOC to DOCX in Microsoft Word instead?

Yes. Open the .doc in Word and choose File → Save As → Word Document (*.docx). Our converter is useful when you don't have Word installed.

Is it free, and are my files kept?

It is free, with no sign-up. Your upload and the converted file are deleted from our server as soon as your download is ready.
