Good to know
Three compression levels are available: Screen (smallest file -- images reduced to about 72 dpi), Ebook (the balanced default -- about 150 dpi), and Printer (keeps image resolution, so it usually shrinks the file very little). Compression works on embedded images, so a text-only PDF can't get much smaller. If the result wouldn't be smaller than your original, you get your original file back unchanged instead of a bigger one.

Will text quality be affected?
Text stays sharp at every level -- compression mainly targets embedded images, so an image-heavy PDF will shrink more than a text-only one.
