    Good to know

The PNG is saved losslessly, so it won't lose more detail when you edit and save it again. Converting can't bring back detail the JPG already lost, and it doesn't make the background transparent -- the image looks exactly as before. Expect a bigger file: a photo saved as PNG is often several times larger than the JPG, so a very large batch may need to be converted in smaller groups. Photos are turned the right way up, and location (GPS) details are removed; the date taken and the camera make and model are kept.

    When you'd use this

    • Uploading an image to a website, app or form that only accepts PNG.
    • Editing a picture several times without the extra loss JPG adds every time it's saved.
    • Adding a photo to a design project or tool that works with PNG files.

    Privacy & security

Your file is used only to perform this conversion, in an isolated temporary workspace, and is deleted automatically as soon as the converted file is returned to you (or immediately if the conversion fails). See our Privacy notice for details.

    Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG keeps exactly what's in your JPG, but it can't restore detail the JPG compression already removed. The benefit is that the image won't lose any more quality when you edit and save it again.

    Will the background become transparent?

No -- a JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Removing a background needs a separate editing tool.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless, and photos are full of fine detail that lossless compression can't shrink much -- so a PNG of a photo is often several times the size of the JPG. Screenshots and simple graphics grow far less.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 20 at a time, with a combined upload of up to 50 MB. Because PNG copies of photos are large, a big batch can go over the 150 MB download limit -- if that happens, convert fewer images at a time.
